About Badami

City of Chalukyas

The Origin of the Chalukyas

In India today, the southern state of Karnataka is home to Badami, a town revered for its breathtaking rock-cut cave and structural Chalukya temples. These temples are the legacy of a dynasty known as the Chalukyas, a golden age in the history of Karnataka. This legacy is present not just in Badami, but also in Pattadakal and Aihole, together the three urban centers of the Badami Chalukyan dynasty, and in which one can enjoy the remains of their majestic temple architecture.

Pulakesi I, founder of the Badami Chalukyas dynasty, came into the picture in around c. 543 AD. Pulakesi’s name probably meant “a powerful lion” or “lion-haired”. He fortified his base by building a citadel in Badami in the same year and went on to declare his supremacy by performing an Ashwamedh Yagna , or horse sacrifice, which was an old Indian tradition where an all-conquering monarch was supposed to declare his suzerainty over others by performing this ritual. Pulakesi I extended his domain during his rule and governed a huge area covering the modern-day Indian states of Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Pulakesi II

Pulakesi II time is Goldan time of Indian History.

Pulakeshin II (IAST: Pulakeśin, 610–642 CE), also spelt (Pulakesi II) and Pulikeshi II, was the most famous ruler of the Chalukya dynasty. During his reign, the Chalukyas of Badami saw their kingdom extend over most of the Deccan.

Pulakeshin was the first ruler in South India to issue gold coinage. Broad and circular in shape, the punch-marked coins had various punches at the edge, and a central punch depicting a Varaha or Boar. The Boar was the royal emblem of the Chalukyas. Contemporary literature cites the gold coins of south India as Varahas.

The dynasty was empire that ruled the Deccan region of India. After fading away for some time they revived they power back during the 10th century and ruled till 12th century. Chalukyas the one who ruled from Badami were the Western Chalukyas, from Kalyani are referred as Later Western Chalukyas and the Chalukyas one from Vengi are known to the historians as the Eastern Chalukyas.

Banashankari Devi Temple

Banashankari Devi Temple (or Banashankari temple) is a Hindu shrine located at Cholachagudda near Badami, in Bagalkot district, Karnataka, India. The temple is popularly called Shakambhari 'Banashankari or Vanashankari' 'since it is located in the Tilakaaranya forest. The temple deity is also called the Shakambhari an incarnation of the goddess Parvati..

The temple attracts devotees from Karnataka as well as the neighbouring state of Maharashtra. The original temple was built by the 7th century Badami Chalukya kings, who worshipped goddess Banashankari as their tutelary deity. The temple celebrates its annual festival called Banashankari jatre, in the months of January or February. The festival comprises cultural programmes, boat festival as well as a Rath yatra, when the temple goddess is paraded around the city in a chariot. Banshakhari is a form of Maa Shakambhari deviWhose temple is located in Badami Taluka of Bagalkot District in Karnataka. It is also known as Shaktipeeth Shakambhari Devi. There are statues of Bhima, Bhramari, Shatakshi and Ganesha along with mother.

Ancient Pilgrimage Place

The Mahakuta Group of Temples dedicated to Lord Shiva is situated in Mahakuta, a town in Bagalkot district of Karnataka, a few kilometres away from Badami. The temples were built during 6th to 8th century by the kings of Chalukya dynasty resembling Aihole style of temple construction. Dravidian and Nagara style are the hybrid of Chalukya style which are used as the main architecture in these temples. They also resemble both northern as well as southern styles. Mahakuta is considered to be an ancient pilgrimage place for Shaivites and Saktas, worshippers of Sakti religion.

There are two inscriptions found in this temple, one is Mahakuta pillar inscription and the other inscription is porch inscription, known as Vinapoti. Mahakuta pillar inscription known as Dharmavijayastambha was written in 7th century by queen of Pulakesi I, Durlabhadevi. It records a grant of ten villages including Pattadakal and Aihole. Vinapoti inscription was written on the balcony of Mahakuteswara temple which describes grant of rubies and silver umbrella to the Lord. The pillar is now on exhibition at Bijapur archaeological museum.

Pattadakal Hostrical Place

The Pattadakal monuments are located in the Indian state of Karnataka, about 165 kilometres (103 mi) southeast of Belgaum, 265 kilometres (165 mi) northeast from Goa, 14 miles (23 km) from Badami, via Karanataka state highway SH14, and about 6 miles (9.7 km) from Aihole, set midst sandstone mountains and Malprabha river valley. In total, there are over 150 Hindu, Jain and Buddhist monuments, and archaeological discoveries, dating from the 4th to 10th century CE, in addition to pre-historic dolmens and cave paintings that are preserved at the Pattadakal-Badami-Aihole site.

The tiny village of Pattadakal is situated on the banks of the Malaprabha river. Referred to as Petrigal by Ptolemy, Pattadakal was later known variously as Raktapura (Red Town) & Pattadakal Kisuvolal . This place reached its pinnacle of glory under the Chalukyas from the seventh to the ninth centuries functioning as a royal commemorative site. The group of about ten temples, surrounded by numerous minor shrines & plinths, represents the climax of early Western Chalukyan Architecture. King Vikramaditya II (734 – 745 AD) and his art loving queens Lokmahadevi & Trailkyamahadevi, brought sculptors from Kanchipuram to create fantasies in stone in Pattadakal .

The Erstwhile Capital of Chalukya Dynasty

Legend has it that Lord Parasuram, after avenging the death of his father came down to the river Malaprabha and washed his blood-stained hands and battle axe. The blood and gore on the axe turned the river red. A woman saw this and screamed ‘Ayyo Hole’ or ‘Oh No Blood!’ in Kannada, hence the name Aihole.

Aihole was once the capital of the Chalukya Dynasty, and is a city with a rich and illustrious history. It has great cultural significance as the cradle of Hindu temple architecture, and has more than 125 temples in and around it. Aihole is an archaeologists’ delight with several temples dating back to Chalukyan times. Excavation and investigation into the history of Aihole continues and several thousand tourists seek out the serene and spiritual ambiance of this city every year.
